About Dr. Rawls

Terry recently launched Strategic Transitions Group, INC. to offer what he has learned about managing change within the culture of higher education to assist individuals and institutions worldwide with embracing and successfully navigating change

Strategic Transitions Group, INC. was conceived and created out of D. Terry Rawls’ lifelong passion for innovation in education. In his own words: I served for fifteen years (1991 - 2006) on the faculty and staff of Central Michigan University (CMU). . .

  • First, as a professor of Counselor Education for about six years,
  • Then, I moved into administration where I held just about every role possible, from department chair to vice president.
  • The last six years were spent primarily with the off-campus / online group at CMU
    • That included spending time as the director of CMU's largest graduate program that at the time had 12,000 students and 700 faculty scattered across North America.
    • I ended up in the leadership role of an amazingly creative, competent and productive group and we did some wonderful things for CMU
The last eight years I have been working in for-profit institutions:
  • First, in a startup in Washington, D.C. called the College for Public Leadership. Unfortunately, CfPL did not launch, and I learned that it is true that you can learn as much from failure as you can from success. . . and sometimes even more!
  • Then, I served as the Vice Chancellor of Academics at Jones International University in Denver, CO. JIU was the first fully-online school to gain regional accreditation.
  • I next moved to Heald College in San Francisco where I served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of the institution.
  • And finally I spent a year with the startup UniversityNow, Inc. a social justice venture aimed at expanding access to higher education. At UNow I served as president of Patten University as we transitioned the school from the brink of closing to a school that is in good standing with it's accreditors.
Today, I am the president and principal of Strategic Transitions Group, Inc. STG is a boutique consultancy that is focused on helping institutions of higher learning, and the occasional business from other industries, navigate change. My clients find that my sensitivity to culture (thanks University of Iowa for the Sociology degree) and strong communications skills (thanks Georgia State and Idaho State for the graduate degrees in Counseling and Counselor Education) lead to outcomes that work for their institutions.
